Blanche Wendell was a native of the District of Columbia. She became Blanche Wendell Woodward in February of 1870, when she married Philadelphia Surgeon Joseph Janvier Woodward. Joseph Woodward is extremely well known for assisting in President Lincoln's autopsy and attending to President Garfield. Blanche accompanied him on many of his scientific and medical endeavors, as well as assisted in his private practice. Joseph Woodward wrote extensively on medicinal practices on the battlefield. Many of the books owned by the Athenaeum related to medicinal science are the contributions of Joseph and Blanche. Blanche attended to her ailing husband, who "had a disease of the brain," before he passed away. She even went before Congress to appeal for appropriations due to her husband for his service as Army Surgeon and for attendance to President Garfield. Blanche passed away in 1895.
Her portrait is a photograph tinted with pastels. It is currently not on exhibit at the Athenaeum.
