Artist Unknown
Description This unsigned portrait of Isaiah Lukens features the clockmaker as a young man dressed in a high collared golden vest and seated with a cane in hand. The year that this portrait was painted is unknown, however Lukens' clothing, particularly the high, twisted collar indicates that this portrait had been painted sometime after 1800. Although the artist is unknown however there are strong links that connect this portrait to the works of Rembrandt and Raphaelle Peale. The linear handlings of the features, the particular use of color and the application of paint all have links to the family tradition. The heavy-handed efforts to achieve deep shadow and bright light, chiaroscuro, indicate that this very well could be the work of Raphaelle Peale.

The second image shown is a later image of Isaiah Lukens, a daguerreotype most likely taken in the early 1840's. The Atheneaum does not hold the original daguerreotype but keeps a reproduction for reference. Original photograph by R. Cornelius in the collection of Marian Carson.
