| Description |
This tall-case clock is an example of the work of James Hansell. The clock's painted iron dial, inscribed with the maker's name, is decorated with delicate, gilded conch shells in the spandrels.
This Hansell clock features a blend of styles that make it a key piece in the history of American furniture. The broken scroll pediment form, associated with earlier colonial clock styles, survives in this piece. Although this clock has an overall historical form, its turned feet are of great interest because they are an early appearance of a decorative arts style which became extremely popular later in 19th century.
James Hansell worked in Philadelphia from 1816 to 1850. His first shop was at 3 North Sixth St.. Hansell's work is distinguished and rare, only three examples of his tall case clocks are known. This clock is located in the DuBarry Conference Room on the first floor of the Athenum. |
