| Description |
This sturdy mahogany chess table, with turned legs and troughs for the pieces, is one of a set of four that survive at The Athenaeum, presumably those acquired in 1847 at the same time as the acquisition of The Athenaeum's own building. Under the oilcloth playing surface of these tables are newspapers dated 1861 which may have been added as padding at the time of a later repair. With daily games conducted by the Athenaeum's chess team the oil cloth surfaces needed replacing from time to time. The society's Minutes of December 1854, for example, list "repairing chess tables and extras, $2.64." The table is placed in the "Chess Room" on the second floor and is set with chess pieces to be used by Athenaeum visitors. |
