& Programs
Since its founding in 1814 the Athenĉum has accumulated nearly
1,000 fine and decorative arts objects by gift and purchase. Many of
these objects were acquired as furnishings or embellishments for the
reading rooms rather than as a museum collection. Since the 1950s,
however, the Athenĉum has acquired more self-consciously,
particularly in the area of Philadelphia decorative arts of the
Grecian style and American fine arts dating from the period 1800 to
1850. The majority of these objects are on exhibition throughout the
building and may be seen by advance appointment. [For more on the
collection, see The Magazine Antiques (December, 1978), pp.
1264-1279.]
In addition, exhibitions that feature objects not normally on
display, are mounted regularly, such as the exhibits below which are
now available online.
